When you want to attract the top candidates, you need a strong job posting. After all, it’s the first thing they’ll see about your company and make a quick decision as to whether or not they want to apply for your position. How can you increase the odds so that you’re able to source the best people for your company? With these five tips from Adams & Garth, one of Charlottesville’s leading staffing agencies:

Take a balanced approach.

It’s important to include enough detail that the candidate can learn about the ins and outs of the role. At the same time, there shouldn’t be so much information that the posting is cumbersome to read. Also, keep in mind, this is a marketing tool. Job postings shouldn’t be dry and boring. Instead, try to make yours interesting, highlighting only the key details and qualifications.

Make it search friendly.

Be sure to include plenty of keywords that a candidate would use to search for a job like yours. That way, it will be more likely to show up in search engines and on job boards, so the right people can find them.

For instance, if you’re looking for a network technician, then include that keyword a few times throughout the posting. In addition, if there are any other relevant words or phrases, such as fiber splicing, make sure to sprinkle those in your posting, as well.

Focus on the candidate.

It’s important to discuss your needs in the job posting. But it’s equally as important to devote some time and effort to talking about why a candidate would want to work for you. In other words, what makes your company special or unique? Are their opportunities for advancement, continual learning, flex scheduling or other attractive perks? These are the kinds of advantages that will set you apart from the competition.

Include instructions.

For instance, ask candidates to use a specific subject line in their email address when applying. Or ask them to explain why they want to work for your company in their cover letter. Doing so will help you to quickly see who can follow directions and who has a harder time with details. As a result, you’ll be able to weed out the weak candidates faster.

Follow up fast.

When a strong candidate applies for your opening, don’t wait days to respond. Instead, follow up quickly so that you can assess their interest and set up a time for a phone screen. There’s plenty of competition out there for high-quality candidates and if you take too long to contact them, another company will snatch them up and make an offer.
