Summer is almost here. And as temperatures rise, productivity can start to dip. What can you do to keep your staff motivated and on track in the months ahead? Here are a few tips from Adams & Garth – one of Staunton’s leading staffing agencies – to help you:

#1: Set summer goals.

Your staff should have goals they’re working toward throughout the year. And it should be no different in summer. On top of that, with employee vacations, summer holidays, and jam-packed schedules, it’s especially easy for your team members to lose focus.

That’s why it’s important to talk with them ahead of time, work out summer vacations and schedules, and plan in advance to ensure you have the manpower in place to get all your work done. When everyone on your team has specific, tangible goals in mind, it’s much easier to stay productive and also measure performance.

#2: Be flexible about scheduling.

Summer is an especially busy time of year for your employees. They likely have more demands and responsibilities, especially if they have children. Make sure you’re understanding and flexible with them. This will go a long way in building trust and loyalty, as well as improving retention. How you build flexibility into the schedule is up to you, but some ideas include:

  • Offering flex hours
  • Letting employees work from home one day a week
  • Allowing employees to leave an hour or two early on Friday afternoons

#3: Encourage break time and vacation.

It may sound counter-intuitive, but time off can actually make your team more productive. Employees who never take breaks are going to wind up burned out and disengaged. That’s why it’s important to encourage your people to use their vacation days, so they can come back relaxed and recharged. Doing so is not only good for the individual health of your people, but for your entire team as well. The more balanced and satisfied your employees are on the job, the harder they’ll work.

#4: Have some fun.

Summer is the season of fun, so embrace it. There are countless ways to infuse play into your work week, from hosting barbecues or a happy hour to taking an afternoon off to participate in a team-building activity. Not only will these efforts help to improve employee satisfaction and happiness, but they’ll also boost camaraderie and morale, setting your team up for a more productive summer.
