As one of the leading staffing agencies in Culpeper – and Central Virginia, Adams & Garth often hear from local companies that they can’t find good quality applicants. But if this is true for you, we know that in many cases, it has more to do with your approach then with the employment market. To help ensure you’re making the right moves when it comes to attracting the best workers to your team, here are a few tips to keep in mind:

Rework your job descriptions.

One of the biggest mistakes employers make during the recruiting process involves their job descriptions and postings. They’re too long, too complicated and list out too many requirements. But this is a big turnoff for the best applicants. Instead, approach your job postings as more of a marketing document and less of a technical one. Focus on your must-have needs, and also what makes your company unique and why an applicant would want to work there.

Revamp your application process.

When you make job applicants complete 10 pages of an online application, they’re going to get frustrated and opt out. You don’t need to know every element of their background. You’re just looking for the career highlights and why you should consider interviewing them. So simplify your application process and make it easier to apply.

Be open about the job, what it entails and the salary.

When a job applicant asks you specific questions on the details of the position or the salary, don’t offer vague, non-committal answers. They’re looking for clear information so they can get a better sense of whether the opportunity is right for them. Every one of them deserves your candor. Keep in mind too that interviewing is a two-way street. Just as you’re assessing an applicant, they too are also evaluating you.

Respect each applicant.

During the hiring process, give each applicant your full attention. Don’t answer your phone during interviews, or keep cancelling phone screens. If you do, the best ones are going to cross your company off their list and will look elsewhere for opportunities.

Keep them in the loop.

One of the biggest complaints from job applicants is that they submit their application or go to an interview only to hear nothing back. But even if you don’t plan to hire a particular person, this paints your company in a bad light. Instead, make sure that you keep applicants informed of where they stand in the hiring process. Whether they get the job or not, they will have a more positive view of your organization, as a result.
