However, there are some steps that you, as a manager, can take to make the holidays a happy time; but also a productive one, too. Here are some tips to help you with the process:
Consider a more flexible work schedule.
It might sound counterintuitive. But when your staff can work more flexible hours – while still getting in their 40 hours per week – then they can actually stay more productive. They won’t have to leave early for their child’s Christmas concert, or try to cram in holiday shopping during their lunch hour. They can get more done in their day when it comes to personal and family needs, while also staying focused on work.
Sometimes, overtime is necessary. But if it’s not during the holidays, try to avoid it. Employees are already feeling stretched thin due to personal obligations; overtime can simply add to that strain and can therefore impact the quality of the work. If you can’t avoid it, use it as a reward for your top performers; for instance, asking them first if they’re interested in the extra money.
Refocus on deliverables.
It’s easy to lose track of goals and deliverables during the hectic holiday season. But in order to ensure all your team members are on target and on the same page, it’s important to hold regular meetings to discuss ongoing projects and orders. Don’t let them run too long, eating up too much of your employees’ day, either. Instead, get to the point, discuss goals for the week and then let your employees get to work.
Hold off on starting big projects if you can.
If you can delay the start of a big initiative or project until January, then do it. December isn’t a great time to start something new and important. There are so many employee vacations and holiday plans and parties that can negatively impact the launch of a new endeavor.
Have some fun.
Don’t forget to infuse some fun and games into your work schedule during the holiday season. It will give your employees important down time. More than that, though, it can create an opportunity for employees to bond, fostering a sense of loyalty and camaraderie that can be tough to produce on a typical Monday. So take advantage of the holidays to have fun together as a team.
