Here are some tips on how to deal with underproductive employees and get them back on track:

Be clear about expectations.

If an employee isn’t measuring up, make sure they’re clear about what they’re supposed to be doing. For instance, if you’re both not on the same page in terms of goals and priorities, it could look like they’re underperforming. In reality, though, they might be focusing on projects that aren’t a priority. Whatever the case, schedule a meeting and talk to them about what you expect from them.

Work together to set goals.

Whether your employees are underperforming or not, you should be working together to set goals, both short- and long-term. These will give you something to measure their performance against. It will also help ensure they’re clear on the specific tangibles you need them to achieve.

Listen and ask questions.

It’s easy to get angry when an employee is falling short. However, it’s important to not act on your emotions. Instead, during your meeting, talk to them about the challenges they’re facing at work – and even at home. Ask questions and really listen to what they have to say. The facts might be different than what you’re perceiving them to be.

Talk about impact.

When an employee isn’t meeting their goals, it does more than impact their performance. It hurts the whole team. While you don’t want to berate or shame them, it is important they understand the effect they’re having on the team and business as a whole. It’s also important that they know how valuable their contributions are when they’re performing at their best.

Offer resources.

Whether an employee needs some additional training or to shadow a veteran employee is up to you, just make sure they have access to the resources to improve their performance.

Monitor the situation.

Once they leave the meeting, it’s keep tabs on your employee. While that doesn’t mean micro-managing them, it does mean checking in with them on a regular basis and asking for progress reports. When you see an improvement, don’t be shy about letting them know. Praise them for their effort.
